Mystery Project!

So work has been quite tiring lately, and thus the Mystery Project hasn’t been progressing as quickly as I’d like. However, starting next month, I’m likely to have an extra day off per week (yay long weekends!) and I thought I’d do an update on how far I am before then.

So: I have finished all of the basic undergarments (not specific for this project, I have several other things I want to make that require very similar underwear). First, late Victorian combinations.

They’ve got tucks + a lace ruffle on the legs and a layered lace trim around the neckline, which is fairly low and sleeveless because I drafted the pattern from scratch according to period instructions and couldn’t be bothered to do the gazillion fittings necessary for me to be able to move freely in a pattern that doesn’t take my unusual shape into account. Maybe someday I’ll draft a better pattern, but for now these will do. They’re about 50% handsewn (I machined the long seams and the tucks, but most of the seams were felled down and the lace trim sewn on by hand).

Also, the amount of fabric gathered over my butt makes it look way bigger than it actually is - great for this time period!

The corset is inspired by the Ferris Waists of the 1880s/90s. (I don’t want to call it a reproduction Ferris corset because there’s several issues with the patterning and sewing - oops.) While I kinda want to try making it again at some point, I think it’s more likely I’ll make an attempt at a different kind of corset the next time I do something in this time period. Maybe an elastic gored sports corset or something.

It does wrinkle quite a bit, but also it only has 3 bones per side: 2 steels at the back/side back and 1 plastic whalebone on the side of the bust, so some wrinkling is to be expected.

The original Ferris waists had really fancy patented buckles on the side for attaching garters to. Mine has some random tightening buckles I got from somewhere. The buttons may have been used to button petticoats or something onto your corset, to reduce bulk? I'm not sure. I use them to keep the ends of the laces on my hips while I'm tightening the back.

Also, the steel bones are removable - making this corset washable! Yay. But that also means that the bones have to be shorter than the channels so that they can be taken out and put back in - which makes the wrinkling problem worse. Boo.

Now, onto the Project Itself! Here is its status:

One item finished & wearable.

One mock-up for the next thing.

Patterns for the lower body prepared and ready for mocking up.

Pile of fabric ready to be cut (once the patterns have been fitted).

I was thinking of giving some kind of a prize to anyone who can guess (or at least get close to) what the Mystery Project actually is, but I can't think of anything so uh. Internet cookies? Maybe a doodle? I'm too tired to make Actual Proper Art right now.
I'll keep you folks posted on how this thing goes.
